THE LEARNER

The year is 1554. The year of a great fire in Eindhoven, Netherlands, a rebellion by Sir Thomas Wyatt against Queen Mary of England, a historical city founding—São Paulo, Brazil, and a royal wedding—Queen Mary marries King Philip of Spain on July 24th of that year.

It is also the year a Learner from an alien galaxy first visits Earth.

Her name is NayéLi and she is a Šumayin from the planet Šumaura. She was sent here when she was thirteen alien years old on a ten year mission—Šumayin years which is a long time by Earth standards as one alien Šumayin year equals fifty-one Earth years.

Her assignment is simple and straightforward—learn everything she can about the flora, fauna, civilizations, history, geology, meteorology, and all other physical characteristics of this third planet from the sun—and convey this data back to her rulers on Šumaura, her home planet millions and millions of light years away on the dark side of the universe.

Assuming the form of Earth’s most advanced species—Homo sapiens, NayéLi becomes a young woman and goes about her business in an impersonal and methodical fashion, never deviating from the covenants and strict rules her controllers have imposed upon her.

Nine Šumayin years have passed and NayéLi, now twenty-two Šumayin years old, has done an exemplary job. One Šumayin year more and she will be ready to depart Earth forever. She will have been successful in all she’s strived for.

Simple and straightforward, right? Or so she thinks.

Until she meets a man who makes her realize she has become far more human than she—or her rulers—could have ever anticipated.

NayéLi does something she never would have thought possible when she first arrived on Earth—NayéLi falls in love.

And suddenly her alien mission and everything else the Šumayin part of her stands for is placed in jeopardy.

THE LEARNER--Facts about Šumaura

1) Šumaura is located in a dark galaxy called XýK, millions and millions of light years from Earth. XýK is found in the dark universe, which is comprised of all dark matter and energy.

2) Dark matter is 85% of all matter.

3) Šumaura’s sun is called XÙ (see photo). XÙ is a dark energy sun and is over five thousand times the mass of our sun. and the dark universe are entirely invisible to the visible or light matter universe. It takes fifty-one Earth years for Šumaura to orbit XÙ, thus one Šumayin year is approximately fifty-one Earth years.

4) The visible matter universe and the dark matter universe are separated by a boundary called the ZÐ. Tremendous energy expenditure is required to cross the ZÐ.

5) Šumaura is approximately the size of Jupiter. Over a thousand Earths would fit inside Šumaura—and because of this great size, the gravitational pull on Šumaura is seventeen times that on Earth.

6) The inhabitants of Šumaura are called Šumayins. Šumayins are the dominant species on Šumaura, and would be invisible to all Earth species. However once a Šumayin takes on the form of the dominant species of the host planet they are visiting, they can be seen and interacted with.

7) In THE LEARNER, the Šumayin who has traveled across the ZРto Earth is named NayéLi. She is twenty-two Šumayin years old.

St. Claws...and more!

Coming soon! My holiday release and the Preface and Chapter One to THE LEARNER.

Things are not going well for Matt Haskel. He’s lost his job and the chance at his dream home, and can't even buy the one Christmas gift his son desires. His marriage is teetering, and the last thing Matt wants to do is spend Christmas Eve with his wealthy in-laws.

But while driving there, the family SUV breaks down just outside a quaint little town called St. Claws, high in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

This last mishap convinces Matt this will be his worst Christmas ever. Little does he know just how wrong initial impressions can be. Or how consequential one little, innocuous wish can become.

Happy holidays, Matt Haskel. You’re about to find out!

After St. Claws, read the introduction to Alan Nayes’ powerful new paranormal romance, THE LEARNER.

The Learner Synopsis

An alien being has come to visit Earth. NayéLi is a Šumayin, an ancient energy species from the planet Šumaura. Šumaura is located in a dark galaxy millions of light years away.

NayéLi is a venӫṩo or Learner.  She was sent to Earth to learn about the planet’s flora and fauna. She arrives when she is still quite young by Šumayin standards, only thirteen Šumayin years, and has lived on Earth for nine Šumayin years, which is equivalent to 459 earth years, as one Šumayin year equals fifty-one earth years. She has assumed the form of a young woman and now at age twenty-two Šumayin years, she is nearing completion of her sojourn on Earth. Her goal is to learn as much as she can about the planet, then return to Šumaura to communicate all she’s learned about Earth. If she is successful, she will be given another planetary assignment. Two successful  planetary assignments will allow her to become a kŭɳұҽ or teacher, a highly sought after Šumayin honor.

NayéLi is bound by the Šumayin laws of planetary exploration. One of the laws states that no venӫṩo can ever become involved with a member of the host species. And up until the time NayéLi is involved in a terrible bus accident, she has followed her rulers’ laws to the letter. Then she meets Jared Russell, a thirty-two year old emergency room physician. Jared is still recovering emotionally from the loss of his wife four years ago in a fatal car crash.

But NayéLi is more human now than she realizes. And just by getting to know Jared she risks succumbing to human emotions. Powerless to rein in her feelings, she breaks the HADJX, the Šumayin covenant that forbids a Learner from ever becoming involved with a host species. In fact, she doesn’t just break it, she shatters the HADJX. NayéLi falls in love.

When her rulers suspect NayéLi is deviating from her assigned mission, they order her to leave him. If she continues to violate her venӫṩon code of conduct, a powerful fӫnṩa or Šumayin retriever will be sent after her to enforce the HADJX.

When she refuses to obey her rulers, NayéLi places not only her entire sojourn on Earth at risk, but also imperils her life as well as the life of the human she’s come to love.

The Real Hemlock Pond!

Yes, there is a real "Hemlock Pond", the name given the fictional haunted pond in my most recent horror release, HEMLOCK POND. Though the actual pond has no name, this small one acre body of water is located hidden back in the woods on some land I own in north Texas. Stories abound about how Indian arrowheads can be found along the creek behind the pond, though I've looked and never found any. Wildlife is abundant though: coyotes, bobcat, raccoons, some deer, wild hogs, plenty, and yes, even opossums--no three legged ones so far. Fish, yes, turtles, yes, frogs, yes, snakes, of course, but there is no fictional kiddie dock--at least I haven't built one yet. Another major difference from the novel is the location--Megan and Zach move to Wisconsin where they encounter the fictional haunted Hemlock Pond. As mentioned earlier, the real pond lies in Texas. But there are no hemlock trees, however plenty of cedar. Why the location change? For the story to work, the pond had to freeze over solidly. This doesn't happen during a Texas winter, though thin films of ice do form along the banks some cold January days. If this pond were really in Wisconsin, it would freeze solid enough you could walk across. Is the real "Hemlock Pond" haunted? That's a good question. I will tell you if you hike down to the pond through the trees late at night, and gaze over the still water on a moonlit evening, you can find yourself thinking of things you might not (or should not) normally be contemplating--like...

GIRL BLUE becomes a bestseller!

Granted it is only in horror, and only on the Samhain publishing website. But the feeling is still good. I hope this will gain the story wider readership. Have to wait and see. GIRL BLUE was released in early April but only today has the novel ever graced a bestseller position. The novel debuted at #3 and has since dropped to #5.

GIRL BLUE  is an erotic supernatural story about a terminally ill sculptor who becomes haunted by his last work.

Today, I have the pleasure of welcoming talented author Angela White. She will be telling us about her latest release ADRIAN'S EAGLES, book four in her Life After War series. Thank you for stopping by, Angela. Compelling cover, btw.

1 Tell us about your upcoming release.
Adrian’s Eagles is book 4 in my 2012 series and very anticipated. I’ve had fans waiting for it most of this year and a good chunk of last, but it wasn’t ready until now. Adrian’s Eagles has multiple plots and subplots but the main theme is the final battle with the Slavers that have been hounding their every step.

2 How did you come up with the title of your book?
I wondered what life would be like after war = life After War. When it was broken into a series, I tried to name each novel after the main theme of each book. For instance, book one is about the immediate aftermath of the apocalypse. It’s called the Survivors.

3 What is---------about?
Fated to lead New America, seven special people survive the apocalypse, only to find themselves on an adventure that will shake the very core of who they thought they were. From dangerous trips into dark, decaying cities, to patriotic rescues and magic revelations, Life After War is an action packed fantasy where those left must come to terms with their mistakes in the old world, while fighting for a place in the new one.

4 Did anything special inspire you to write this particular story? Why?
The Terminator films and watching President Clinton get elected. Need I say more?

5 Tell us a little about any current works in progress.
I’m actually taking the summer off now that my new release is live and I haven’t chosen what I’ll be working on. Just need to give my blurry eyes a break… but I suspect something horrible perfect will find its way to my pen.

6 What do you as an author find as the most challenging aspect of writing? How do you deal with this?
Finding the quiet-time. I’ve taken to working on it in the am hours at night and in the morning before anyone else gets up.

7 What are you currently reading?
I just finished the Hunger Games again. Its easily one of my favorites, though the Endless Magic series by Rachel Higginson was good, too. I plan to read The Flu by Jackie Druga next… or maybe Dust. Not sure which yet. Did you know she has over 3 dozen works available?

8 If you could coauthor a story with any writer out there—deceased or alive—who would it be? Or would you even consider collaboration?
I would consider it, but as to whom, I couldn’t even guess… unless Mark Vincent needs something penned! I doubt Stephen King would accept my request either and I can’t think of anyone else I’d share that honor with. We writers are just too picky.

9 Writing can be very challenging—what do you do to just “get away” for a break every so often?
I go to Target World and blast away with my 9mm... Doesn’t everyone?

10 What do you like LEAST about writing?
Editing. Besides the expense, it so important that I often stress over it.

11 Any advice for beginning authors?
Hire a real editor and save yourself all kinds of pain. And check out the weekly ebook series on my blog. You can get all kinds of great information, like how to increase sales on Amazon and where to get hundreds of free reviews.

12 Tell us about your other published works.
I have 11 titles available. If you go here, you’ll see the list and formats. Most are also related to the apocalypse, as the end of the world is an obsession of mine, but I also have two short story collections that are a mix of fantasy, horror, and sci fi.

13 How can readers contact you?
I have a form on my website and I love to hear from readers. They can also connect with me on FB and Twitter, or email me directly at a7777777Angela@yahoo.com

14 List of purchase links for your books.

Adrian’s Eagles Three months after the War of 2012, Safe Haven refugee camp has made it to South Dakota and now holds six of the seven special survivors meant to lead the rebuilding of their country -but it can’t be done until they find a safe place to settle… and who can think of peace when there’s a huge camp of foreign invaders less than a day behind their group and they only want one thing? Safe Haven and everyone inside the light.

Free-The Survivors-The bestselling novel that started it all.

I just want to say thanks, Alan, for having me! It’s been short and sweet, the best type of interview.
Waving at you,

GIRL BLUE

GIRL BLUE from Samhain Publishing

Her spirit waited within the stone, ready to live again.

Renowned sculptor Jeremy Copper is determined that his latest work, Girl Blue, will be his masterpiece. He’s found the perfect stone for it, a rare block of blue granite from a quarry in Brazil. But this stone is special in more ways than one. The former owner of the great block was a woman named Franscesca, a witch in the 1920s who loved a talented young sculptor. He promised to carve her likeness, but when he betrayed her love she exacted a terrible vengeance and paid for it with her life.

Jeremy begins to fear for his sanity when he finds flakes of granite in his bedroom. Late at night, he hears strange noises coming from his locked studio. The sculpture continues to progress, even in his absence, a sinister form emerging beyond his control. But this frightening new version is not at all what Jeremy intended. Franscesca’s vengeful spirit lives on, and she’s more dangerous than ever.

Why GIRL BLUE? I’ve been asked this many times, mostly during the initial writing stages when that terrible first draft began to take shape: how in the hell did I come up with such a macabre concept as presented in this novel? Though on the surface the answer might seem readily apparent—I wanted to write a story about a haunted sculpture—in reality, the truth is far less straightforward and simplistic. And once the novel was complete, and I was into the final editing phase and reading what I’d written, whoa, I found myself asking did I really write this? Because no matter how many more novels I write, I know I will never write another one as bizarre as GIRL BLUE.

The initial idea for this story was very one dimensional—I was going to write about a man who becomes addicted to sex by frequenting erotic massage parlors. GIRL BLUE and the haunted rock weren’t even on the horizon. Only after I’d delved twenty per cent or so into the manuscript did I realize I could only write so much about a guy paying for massages that included  “happy endings.” In essence the story had come (no pun intended) to a screeching halt. I needed more.

Enter a quote by the renowned sculptor Auguste Rodin, famous for The Thinker and many, many other sculptures. “How dazzling is the sight of a woman undressing.” I’d read an article about Rodin and when I saw this quote, a light blinked in my head. Suddenly my protagonist was going to be a sculptor and his specialty would be sculpting nude women in stone. The sex addiction quickly fell by the wayside—but not totally as the story will reveal. Without giving away any spoilers, the other aspects of the story naturally fell into place and like the sculpture in the novel, GIRL BLUE was created. I must admit this was a fun book to write though the research at times was daunting as I’d never taken an art class in my entire life. I harbor a new respect for artists in all endeavors—authors, painters, sculptors, actors, singers, photographers, I’d even include athletes in this list as some are truly artistic in their performances. There is one common denominator in all—striving for perfection. Nothing less than perfect is acceptable.

I have no idea how GIRL BLUE will be accepted by readers but I do know this. The story is so bizarre there will be pockets of individuals who will either love it or hate it. I can only hope the former predominate. But we’ll see. It arrives April 3rd, 2012.

Happy reading!

Today we have Kevin Domenic!

I am happy to announce the talented indie author Kevin Domenic is with me today. Kevin is the author of Building Blocks and has been writing fantasy novels since he was fourteen. Originally from Thomas Edison's hometown of West Orange, New Jersey, Kevin currently lives and works in St. Louis where he is actively pursuing his writing career. From the five star review Building Blocks has received, it appears Kevin is definitely heading in the right direction. Thank you, Kevin for stopping in. Welcome!

So here we go, Kevin, you have the mike!

1 Kevin, tell us about your recent release.

Building Blocks is a Christian novel that explores the life of an abused young man named Herbert as he struggles to understand why a loving God would allow bad things to happen in this world.

2 How did you come up with the title of your book?

Throughout the course of my own life, I've watched as the negative events of my life have actually helped me grow into the person I am.  In effect, each hardship is just another building block of my personality.  I really believe that without trials, without struggles, without adversity, we would never learn anything.  It's a requirement in order for us to grow as people.

3 What is about?

Herbert is a suicidal young man, isolated from the world and tired of trying to belong.  The book is written in journal form; he is in therapy undergoing a unique treatment which involves traveling back through time to witness the events of his youth which scarred him so deeply.  Throughout it all, he begins to see how each puzzle piece fell together, how each event had positive effects, and how the troubles we experience can rarely be taken at face value.

4 Did anything special inspire you to write this particular  story? Why?

In many ways, this is the story of my life.  Many of the things in this book actually happened to me.  There are differences—Herbert's parents are abusive alcoholics while my parents were both wonderful—but the underlying journey that Herbert must take is very similar to my own struggle to understand the harsh reality of this world.

Why?  Because I wanted to try to use my experiences to help others.  If there's one thing I've learned, it's that no matter how alone you may feel in this world, there are always people out there going through the same thing.  And the feedback I've received so far has been overwhelmingly positive.  The reviews on Barnes & Noble and Amazon's websites have brought tears to my eyes.

5 Tell us a little about any current works in progress.

I have returned to The Fourth Dimension, my sci-fi/fantasy series.  Currently, I'm working on a free webseries from The Fourth Dimension universe called Shades of Gray.  I've written one Episode already, and I'm currently wrapping up Episode II.  It can be found here: http://tfdworlds.blogspot.com

6 What do you as an author find as the most challenging aspect of writing? How do you deal with this?

Paying attention.  It's not that I'm not interested in my writing—I very much am!—I just am easily distracted.  If I'm having too much trouble wording a description or something, I'll get a soda.  Then check facebook.  Before I know it, a half-hour has passed and I'm sitting there complaining to myself that I've made no progress!  It's my own fault, I know.  And I deal with it by forcing myself to stay at the computer as long as it takes because I want to make progress with my work.

7 What are you currently reading?

Winter's Heart by Robert Jordan.  Admittedly, I've been slacking in reading lately; between writing and working full-time and such, I haven't found a whole lot of reading time.

8 If you could coauthor a story with any writer out there—deceased or alive—who would it be? Or would you even consider collaboration?

I don't know that I could.  I've tried working with people before, but I tend to get very territorial about my ideas.  I'm very specific on how things should look, feel, and sound, and I get nuts if I can't make it work right.  It's a sickness, really.  A sort-of OCD.

9 Writing can be very challenging—what do you do to just “get away” for a break every so often?

Video games, mostly.  Gaming inspired my writing interest to begin with, so it's always a good escape for me.  It's just sad that the industry doesn't put out quality RPGs like it used to.  There hasn't been a good Final Fantasy game since number ten, and there hasn't been an awesome RPG since the days of Final Fantasy III (U.S.) and Chrono Trigger.

10 What do you like LEAST about writing?

Promoting.  I hate selling myself.  I don't like telling people I'm awesome because I don't really feel that way.  When I tell people my books are great, it feels arrogant and pompous.  I'd much rather let other people decide for themselves whether or not they like it.

11 Any advice for beginning authors?

Do not, under any circumstances, let anyone tell you that you can't do it.  If you really want it, if you're really dedicated, and if you put in every ounce of effort, you can do anything.  Like Kermit the Frog says:  "Life's like a movie.  Write your own ending."

12 Tell us about your other published works.

There are three volumes of The Fourth Dimension currently available.  Volume I is called Key to the Stars, Volume II is called Alliance of Serpents, and Volume III is called Eye of the Tornado.  The series is about a young teen named Arus who has his free-will stolen from him after suffering a tragic disfigurement.  Then there's Retail Ramblings, a collection of true stories I wrote about my years of servitude to the retail beast.  And of course, there's Building Blocks.
